A Lot of IF's

IF his hoof quarter crack is REALLY minor,
IF it's not causing him pain,
IF the patch they put on it holds,
IF he runs like he ran the last 5 races,

(If he poops on the way to the gate, as he has in the last two races)
(If he tries to nip, buck, kick, or just generally irritate either his jockey or his trainer, like he has in the last two races)

If he loads well,
If nothing stupid happens,

Then, he will be the first triple crown winner in the last 30 years, and we may see if he's really a reincarnation of Secretariat.

Good Luck, Sweet Boy. My heart and wishes are with you.

IF you don't feel well before the race, TELL SOMEONE, so you will have a chance to heal and become the fine daddy horse, I know you can be! Don't risk your life for a title and to line someone's pockets- they've already made stud contracts for you, so there's no need. This injury doesn't have to be life-threatening.

Be careful.

Horrible in horse racing. Which horse are you speaking about? Who this tribute to this brave animal?

Thoroughbred horse racing is a horrible industry, the owners only care about winning big and making money, the people that truly care about the animals are the grooms and sable hands that see them and care for them on a daily basis.
The only reason they spent so much money trying to fix up Barbaro was so they could use him for stud, they didn't care about him as an animal...makes me sick.
I own a off the track TB gelding btw...

Logis, it's Big Brown, who will be racing the third race of the Triple Crown , the Belmont Stakes, today. The only other horse who was favored to perhaps win was scratched from the race a little while ago, though there are a couple who might still give BB a good run.

Nysak, the fans also care, though usually we're not in a position to do anything other than bite our nails and hope everything turns out ok--- I mean the fans of the actual horses, the ones who don't care who wins, as long as everyone gives it their best. I've never met a Thoroughbred in person.Quarters and Arabians are what I generally get to associate with. (and not nearly enough of that, as it is!) I don't bet, and I don't ever see myself betting. I couldn't care less who actually finishes first, but I do care that they ALL finish healthy. I actually thought about you as I was reading the descriptions of the injury Big Brown has. Thought you'd probably know a bit more about it than I do!

(what scares me is how the injuries have developed in him in the past. It's caused by hoof wall separation to start, then splits upwards. He's had it in both front feet in the last 6 months. This latest one is on the inside left front hoof and is about 5/8ths of an inch in length)

TB are prone to quarter cracks, they(as a breed) have very poor quality hoofs, bad breeding, so long as they are fast and have the winning drive who cares if the hoofs are weak? it's sad but true.
Same with QH, they have small feet relative to their size so they get navicular and laminitis...we humans have done them a disservice in making them look "pretty" for our standards.

crossing my fingers too sis.
And they are beautiful. Right there with you on the 'finish healthy' part. it's such a shame to see one destroyed for our stupidity.

My grandfather was a big fan of horse-racing, and my dad still is. I guess that particular gene skipped me. I like horses and riding...just not a fan of racing. Still, I remember watching with Dad as Affirmed won the last Triple Crown, and so, whenever a horse wins the first two legs, I watch the Belmont.

It's sad that all the experts are now saying there wasn't anything wrong with him. I don't know a thing about horses and even I could tell there was something wrong!

I don't think horses stumble out of the gate for no good reason! It looks to me like he was hurt. I'm glad the jockey had enough sense to not push him! Too bad he had to finish last.

I wonder how many millions of dollars were lost betting on him. I don't think anything was wrong with him. I think he just didn't feel like racing. Who knows?

1pm mount time: I heard 4.6 million in bets. I don't know if that answers the question.

Yeah...

What I saw was:

Before they went into the tunnel, on the walkout to the gates, his head was down and he was not playful, excited, upbeat, or cantankerous. He was too calm, even for him.

He did poop on the other side of the tunnel, so there was some hope that maybe he'd decided, as long as he was there, to give it a try, but he didn't play with his bit and he seemed a bit too flirty- not focused, no game face- with his leader horse. (not flirty good, just like he was swapping locker room stories)

Then, there was the pull at the release from the gate, immediately followed with being boxed in, which he hates, and being along the rail, which he hates, and being bumped by the #2 horse, at the start.

Then, about at the 1/2 mile, he asked for his head, but Desormeaux said not yet (which I agree with), but I would have taken him to the outside of the pack, the sweet spot he likes.

Then, he was bumped at least once more and he might have been clipped by the lead horse around the back side turn.- hard to tell, there was another horse in the way to be able to see clearly. It wasn't a major clip if it happened, but with the other things that had already happened and the fact that he didn't have his head, he seemed to pretty much give up around that point and throw a "well, fine" fit about that time.

It wasn't his best effort, but I still like him, and if any of these things had gone differently, the race might have gone better. I don't think he was really in the mood, and that sort of thing happens. I don't think he's been injured and his feet seemed fine when I watched, but you know, I wasn't there looking at him in person, so I could easily have missed something, but I think it just wasn't his day and he just wasn't there for it.

Well, I missed your post & the race, but am betting he heard your whisperings, T. Knowing how empathic you are with critters, it would NOT surprise me to learn he heard what you said and so he just gave it a "whatevah" kind of run today.

For folks who didn't know - T told me when one of my dogs was having a serious contraction.. just seconds before she [the dog] whelped her first pup of that litter. This was when she was on the phone with me! I swear this lady has a special gift with animals and can "talk" to them long distance! <3

soo... you're saying I lost all those people money? ;)

I'm glad he seems ok, but I still have a couple concerns and I'm hoping I'm wrong and that we'll hear something more about him in the next few days- something good, that is, like they've decided to rest and light train him so he can come back for Travers or the Breeder's Cup. At only 7 races, we still don't know what he is capable of, and I have suspicions about that, too, so I'd like to see him whole and racing again.
